Abandoned Places - Places of Exile

This day trip takes visitors on a poetic journey amongst the lunar landscapes of the "calanchi" (unusual eroded clay formations) as you follow in the footsteps of Carlo Levi and spend the morning visiting the charming town of Aliano, where the artist/activist spent a year in exile in the 1930's. Here, you will retrace his steps at the Carlo Levi House & Museum, after which you can have lunch in a quaint, traditional restaurant, where you'll try some of the delectable,  local cuisine.

After lunch, you can move on to the mysterious & hauntingly beautiful abandoned town of Craco to learn about its complex & tragic demise.

• Having your own transportation (and a sense of adventure!) is a must, as public transport is limited.

• Duration: this is a full day excursion. Allow an entire day to see both sites. 

• Level of difficulty: easy, although *Comfortable walking shoes with good traction are highly recommended.
