This walking tour of Matera's historic center & ancient Sassi neighborhoods is essential for first-time visitors who wish to get a good feel for the town, it's roots & to better understand the fascinating evolution of this magical place. 

The tour begins in the mostly Baroque historic center and then moves on to the oldest & most interesting part of the town, the "Sassi" (referring to the neighborhoods carved in "stone").  We will have the opportunity to see one of the unique rock-hewn churches and cave-house museums during this panoramic walk through one of the oldest human settlements in the world! By the end of the tour, you will have a clearer understanding as to why this place was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993 and what makes it so truly unique.
